So, with the Miata currently in the shop to have its hesitation/running pig-rich issue pin-pointed and solved, guess what shows up on eBay? That mother-honkin’ wooden !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! in 8/10 condition. It’s 90$ which is 30$ over the Mazdaspeed OEM-sourced price but remember, this is a Japan-only discontinued item that was for sale as a dealership aftermarket item in 2005 only.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Dangit, Miata, why’d you have to break right when the timing was right to buy that !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ?

Word of warning, I’ve had two that I picked up over the years. Both had the adhesive that holds the wood on fail. Not a huge deal, but really obnoxious when the top of your shifter comes off while you're driving.

I have a plan in which I recreate my nardi knob with cast aluminum and faux woodgrain paint it.

That’s not a bad idea but I’m mostly attracted to the wooden knob (and now steering wheels) for it hopefully conducting less heat than the stock black rubbery-plastic knob that loves to heat up on a sunny day with the top down. I did find a guy in NC who can make a close replica of the nardi teardrop knob (I guess he’s either owned a Miata or has a spare knob around as reference) in a variety of wood finishes but you’ll have to come up with your own way to give them some weight.

my wood one is nice but the metal badge on top is slightly uncomfortable sometimes. Also I heard by all the miata pros that a metal one with its added weight is much much better for some reason.
Why not carve one yourself?

Ah, you must have the Nardi Evolution knob that some of the special NAs received!
The pros are right, in a sense, I think a shift knob should have some weight to it for greater momentum when throwing those shifts and the added weight prevents it from vibrating as much as un-weighted knobs. Someone on Miata.net weighed the stock teardrop knob along with the wooden teardrop and the Evo knob. Stock was about 7.1 ounces, the wooden variant was 6.2, and the Evo was a feather at like 2.2 ounces.
